Allelopathy in Spatially Distributed Populations

چکیده

In a homogeneously mixing population of E. coli, colicin-producing and colicin-sensitive strategies both may be evolutionarily stable for certain parameter ranges, with the outcome of competition determined by initial conditions. In contrast, in a spatially-structured population, there is a unique ESS for any given set of parameters; the outcome is determined by how effective allelopathy is in relation to its costs. Furthermore, in a spatially-structured environment, a dynamic equilibrium may be sustained among a colicin-sensitive type, a high colicin-producing type, and a ‘‘cheater’’ that expends less on colicin production but is resistant. 7 1997 Academic Press Limited

A Multitype Contact Process with Frozen Sites: a Spatial Model of Allelopathy

In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the two-color multitype contact process intended to mimic a biological process called allelopathy. To be precise, we have two types of particle. Particles of each type give birth to particles of the same type, and die at rate 1. When a particle of type 1 dies, it gives way to a frozen site that blocks particles of type 2 for an exponentially distr...

Blue-green algal inhibition of diatom growth: transition from mesotrophic to eutrophic community structure.

Cell-free filtrates of axenic or bacterized cultures of the dominant blue-green algae from a freshwater lake inhibited the growth of diatoms isolated from the same lake. Lake waters, collected during blue-green algal blooms, also inhibited diatom growth. In situ observations over a 5-year period indicate that diatom bloom populations vary inversely with the levels of the preceding blue-green al...

Catechin–metal interactions as a mechanism for conditional allelopathy by the invasive plant Centaurea maculosa

1. Evaluating variation, or ‘conditionality’, in plant interactions is crucial to understanding their ecological importance and predicting where theymight be at play.Much is known about conditionality for competition, facilitation and herbivory, but not for allelopathy, which likely contributes to the equivocal nature of reports on this topic.Centaurea maculosa (spotted knapweed) is an invasive...

The Impact of Microbial Biotransformation of Catechin in Enhancing the Allelopathic Effects of Rhododendron formosanum

Rhododendron formosanum is distributed widely in the central mountains in Taiwan and the major allelopathic compound in the leaves has been identified as (-)-catechin, which is also a major allelochemical of an invasive spotted knapweed in North America. Soil microorganisms play key roles in ecosystems and influence various important processes, including allelopathy. However, no microorganism h...

Simulation of Water Balance Components Using a Distributed Hydrological Model in Taleghan Watershed

Water changes information in the hydrological system, in time and space, as an environmental issue takes heed of managers and decision makers in watershed management and river engineering, which can be addressed by using spatially distributed modeling. In this study simulation of water balance components in Taleghan mountainous watershed is performed using the spatially distributed hydrological...
